Chiktan Fort, in Kargil district, was the capital of the Cig-tan principality, built in the 16th century by Balti craftsmen and once famed across Lhasa as an architectural masterpiece.
Chiktan Fort is known for
A short history
Local tradition holds that Tahtah Khan, a prince of Baltistan, began construction of an earlier palace after fleeing a failed assassination attempt. The current fort was built in the 16th century by Balti craftsmen under architect and carpenter Shinkhen Chandan, combining rammed earth and stone masonry with mud mortar and timber framing; the palace reportedly contained a room that rotated, powered by blown air. It remained inhabited until the late 19th century, when Dogra rulers annexed the area and began demolishing it. [Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiktan]
