India Gate is a 42-metre war memorial arch on the ceremonial Kartavya Path, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1931. It honours around 74,000 Indian soldiers who died in the First World War and the Third Anglo-Afghan War, their names inscribed on its sandstone walls.

When to go

October to March is ideal, with pleasant evenings; the arch is beautifully floodlit after dark and Republic Day on 26 January sees the grand parade here.

Cultural notes

Beneath the arch stood the Amar Jawan Jyoti eternal flame, merged in 2022 with the flame at the nearby National War Memorial; a statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose now stands under the canopy behind the arch.

By Metro: Central Secretariat is among the nearest stations. By Road: Located on Kartavya Path in central Delhi, easily reached by taxi or bus. By Air and Train: About 15 km from the airport and 5 km from New Delhi Railway Station.
