Unakoti, in the forested hills of northern Tripura, is an ancient Shaiva pilgrimage and archaeological site famous for its colossal rock-cut carvings and stone images dating back over a thousand years. Legend says there are one less than a crore of images here, giving the site its name, set amid waterfalls and greenery.

When to go

October to March is the best time; the site is especially atmospheric after the rains, when waterfalls are full.

Why visit

The name means one short of ten million, which is how many carvings the legend claims. What survives is a scatter of huge rock-cut Shivas and Ganeshas down a jungle stream, seventh to ninth century, moss over most of them. The Ashokashtami fair in April is when it fills.

Unakoti is an important centre of Shaiva worship, with giant carvings including a towering Shiva head, believed to date from around the 7th to 9th centuries.

How to reach

By Road and Train: Unakoti is near Kailashahar in northern Tripura, reachable by road from Agartala (about 180 km) and via the Kumarghat railhead. By Air: Agartala has the nearest airport.
