Neermahal is a striking water palace rising from the middle of Rudrasagar Lake near Melaghar in Tripura, built by the Manikya king in the 1930s as a royal summer retreat. Blending Hindu and Mughal architectural styles, its white-and-red pavilions are reached by boat and beautifully reflected in the lake.

When to go

October to March is the most pleasant time for boat rides and sightseeing.

Why visit

A palace in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake, built in the thirties as a summer house and reached only by boat. It stands empty and part-unrestored, which honestly suits it. Go late in the afternoon and come back at dusk.

Neermahal was built as a summer palace by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya and is one of the few lake palaces in India, alongside those of Rajasthan.

By Road: Neermahal is at Melaghar, about 55 km from Agartala. By Air and Train: Agartala has the nearest airport and major railway station.
