Kargil is Ladakh's second-largest urban centre after Leh and its joint capital, 204 km east of Srinagar and 234 km west of Leh. That position is the reason to know it: the natural halt on the road between the two. The town sits on the Suru River near its confluence with the Wakha Rong, and it is the Wakha Rong valley that carries the most accessible route onward to Leh. Come expecting a working district headquarters rather than a view. Take the evening slowly for the altitude and leave early.
