Leh-Ladakh is a high-altitude desert region cradled by the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges in the union territory of Ladakh. Famed for stark moonscapes, centuries-old Buddhist monasteries, turquoise lakes such as Pangong Tso and dramatic passes like Khardung La, it is one of India's greatest adventure and road-trip destinations, best explored from May to September.
When to go
June to September — the only window when roads are open and accommodation is operating.
Why visit
Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley dunes, Magnetic Hill, Khardung La, and centuries-old monasteries like Thiksey and Hemis. For bikers, the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways are bucket-list rides.
Cultural notes
Ladakhi culture is rooted in Tibetan Buddhism. Monasteries are active centres of religious life — observe quietly and ask before photographing monks.
How to reach
Fly to Leh airport from Delhi (1 hour) for fastest access. By road, the Srinagar–Leh and Manali–Leh highways open once the snow clears — Srinagar–Leh usually first, Manali–Leh later — and both shut again for winter. Opening and closing dates move every year with the snow, so check the current status rather than planning to a fixed window. Acclimatize for 24–48 hours before sightseeing.
