The linga here has eight faces, and that is the reason to make the detour. The temple stands on the Shivna River at Mandsaur, near the Rajasthan border in Malwa, about 200 kilometres from Indore. Its sculpture is dated by inscriptions to the 5th or 6th century, but the site was already drawing pilgrims in the 2nd century CE, when it was called Dashapura and Kalidasa wrote about its women. Ten inscriptions found in the area, nine of them Sanskrit poems mostly dated between 404 and 487 CE, are why scholars use this place to date sites as distant as the Elephanta Caves.
