Dzukou Valley, straddling the Nagaland-Manipur border, is a high-altitude trekking paradise famous for its rolling green meadows and the rare seasonal Dzukou lily. A favourite among young trekkers and campers, it is the best overnight trek in the Northeast. Reached via steep forest trails from Viswema or Zakhama near Kohima, the valley opens into a surreal landscape of undulating grasslands cut by a winding stream. Camping under the stars, the monsoon bloom of wildflowers, and the sense of remote wilderness make it a rising bucket-list trek for adventure-minded travellers.

When to go

June to September for the wildflower bloom; October to November for clear trekking weather. Winters can see frost and snow.

Why visit

On the Nagaland–Manipur border, and the lily that grows in this valley grows nowhere else — flowering roughly June to September. Two routes up, from Viswema and Zakhama, one short and steep and the other long and gradual. Accommodation is a basic rest house or a cave.

Cultural notes

The valley lies in Angami Naga country near Kohima, a region rich in warrior heritage and famous for the Hornbill Festival; local communities manage access and conservation of the meadows.

How to reach

Nearest airport/rail: Dimapur (~75 km). Drive to Kohima, then to the trek base at Viswema or Zakhama; trek 3-5 hours up to the valley.

The second, up to just under four thousand metres on Apharwat, is frequently closed for wind and its tickets are capped daily — buy both stages early or accept that you may only get the first. If you are skiing off-piste, a guide is not optional. This is avalanche terrain and it has killed people.

Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur is the coffee heartland of Karnataka, a lush hill district in the Western Ghats where rolling estates, misty peaks and waterfalls draw a steady stream of young travellers from Bengaluru and beyond. Girnar Hills

The Girnar Hills rise outside Junagadh, an old volcanic range whose highest point, Gorakhnath Peak, reaches 1,031 metres — the highest in Gujarat. Reaching them means either climbing a famous stairway of nearly 10,000 steps or taking the ropeway up over the forested valleys.

Ziro Valley

Ziro is a valley of rice paddies ringed by pine hills, and it is the home of the Apatani — one of the few communities in India who terrace-farm rice and fish in the same flooded field. The farming is the thing to understand here. The Apatani irrigate paddy and raise fish in the same water, without machinery, on a system worked out over centuries. Walk out into the fields around Hong or Hija in the early morning and you will see it running. Older Apatani women wear facial tattoos and large nose plugs — the practice was abandoned decades ago, so the last generation carrying it is now elderly. It is a difficult thing to photograph well and an easy thing to photograph rudely. Ask, and accept no. The Ziro Festival of Music happens in late September, brings a few thousand people to a valley with limited beds, and transforms the place for a weekend. Whether that is the version you want is a real question. Arunachal Pradesh requires an Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals and a Protected Area Permit for foreign nationals; arrange it before you travel. Come March to October.

Himachal Pradesh

McLeodganj & Dharamshala

McLeodganj, the upper town of Dharamshala, is the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile, and one of India's most beloved workation and backpacker bases. On a ridge of the Dhauladhar range, it blends Tibetan Buddhist culture, Himalayan trekking and a deeply traveller-friendly cafe and hostel scene. The town is a hub for meditation and yoga retreats, momos and global cafes, and treks to Triund and the Indrahar Pass. Kodachadri

Kohima

Kohima

Kohima's war cemetery is the most affecting war memorial in India, and most people who come for the Hornbill Festival never walk up to it. In 1944 the Japanese advance into India was stopped here, on a tennis court on the ridge above town. The court's markings are still laid out in stone among the graves. The inscription at the base — the one about telling those at home that we gave our today for their tomorrow — is worth the climb on its own. The Hornbill Festival runs the first ten days of December at Kisama, a purpose-built village of tribal morungs where all the Naga groups perform. It is worth seeing and it is also a festival built for visitors; if you want the everyday version of Naga life you will find more of it in the villages around Khonoma, an hour away, than at Kisama. Nagaland requires an Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals; foreign nationals need to register on arrival. Sort it in advance. October to May is dry. December means Hornbill, full hotels and prices to match — book months ahead or stay in Dimapur and travel up.

Khonoma is a historic Angami Naga village about 20 km from Kohima in Nagaland, celebrated as India's first green village. Famous for community-led conservation, terraced rice fields and a proud history of resistance, it is surrounded by the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary.
