A field of squat, mushroom-domed pillars is what survives of the Kachari kingdom that ruled Dimapur before the Ahoms invaded in the 16th century. Nobody knows what the pillars were for. Local belief says a game resembling chess was played across the domes, which is as good an explanation as anyone has produced. The site is not well kept: some pillars stand whole, others have crumbled and been left that way. Come for the oddness of the shapes rather than a restored monument, and half an hour is enough.
