Darjeeling is a highland town at about 2,042 metres on a steep mountain ridge of the Lesser Himalayas in northern West Bengal. Dominated visually by the snow mass of Mount Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak on earth, the town is known for its carpeted loops of colonial-era tea estates. The commercial heart of Darjeeling centers around the pedestrian square of Chowrasta Mall, packed with vintage bookstores, old tea lounges, and handicraft stalls. The town features distinct architectural layers combining British colonial masonry with rich Tibetan Buddhist monastic heritages, synchronized with the narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway toy train.

A short history

Developed by the British in the 1830s-40s as a sanatorium and hill retreat after they acquired the land from the Chogyal of Sikkim, Darjeeling grew around Scottish-run tea estates from the 1850s onward and the narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, opened in 1881 to move planters and tea to the plains.

Why Darjeeling matters

Famous for its tea gardens and the UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, with views of Kanchenjunga on clear days.

When to go

The ideal months to explore Darjeeling are from March to May for spring blooms, and from October to December for crisp clear mountain visibility.

Why visit

The tea and the Kanchenjunga skyline are the draw. The Tiger Hill sunrise everyone books is several hundred cars in a queue at four in the morning, and the view from Batasia Loop or your own roof is almost as good.

Cultural notes

Originally a quiet mountain territory populated by indigenous Lepcha and Gorkha clans, the ridge was developed into a prominent summer sanatorium by the British East India Company in the early 19th century. Dr. Campbell introduced Chinese tea plants in 1841, spawning an international luxury economy producing unique Muscatel-flavored leaves.

How to reach

The closest domestic air gateway is Bagdogra International Airport, located 70 km down the hill, while New Jalpaiguri Junction is the major railway hub (72 km). It connects via the historic narrow-gauge UNESCO toy train, or via winding mountain highways navigated by shared or private taxis.
