No piers stand in the Teesta here — the depth and the current of the river ruled them out — so the whole reinforced-concrete span hangs from one fixed arch with its ends anchored in rock on either bank. That is what to look at. It was completed in 1941, four years after John Anderson, then Governor of Bengal, laid the stone, and named for the coronation of George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Locals call it Baghpool, tiger bridge, for the two tiger statues at one entrance. National Highway 17 crosses here and links the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, so this is a working road, not a viewpoint.

Darjeeling sits at about 2,042 metres on a steep mountain ridge of the Lesser Himalayas in northern West Bengal, under the snow mass of Mount Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak on earth. The colonial-era tea estates run in loops down the slopes below the town.
