West Bengal is three states stacked on each other: the delta, the plains and the Himalaya. Nowhere else in India can you go from mangrove swamp to Kangchenjunga views without leaving a state boundary, and no single itinerary covers all of it well. The route that works is Kolkata, then the Sundarbans, then north to Darjeeling or Kalimpong. Sundarbans National Park has been a natural World Heritage Site since 1987, is reachable only by boat, needs permits, and wants two nights; treated as a day trip it is a long ride to look at mud. Darjeeling deserves three days, partly for the Himalayan Railway, on the UNESCO list since 1999. Bolting the Dooars on afterwards is the usual mistake. The part most people skip is the middle of the state. Santiniketan, Tagore's school, became a World Heritage Site in 2023. Bishnupur's terracotta temples are the finest brick carving in eastern India. Both are quiet. October to March, and November to February if you can choose.

Best time to visit

October to March, when the Sundarbans are workable and the Darjeeling hills are clear. Durga Puja falls in September or October and turns Kolkata into a street-level art show; UNESCO inscribed it in 2021. Avoid June to September, when the hill roads slip and the delta floods.
