The Dhinodhar Hills are an isolated volcanic hill range located near Nakhatrana taluka in the Kutch district. Rising dramatically to an elevation of 386 meters out of the semi-arid arid flatlands, this volcanic plug formation holds immense geological and spiritual significance. The destination is a prominent trekking hub characterized by dark volcanic rock paths, dense thorny scrub forests at the base, and a historic mountaintop monastery dedicated to the ascetic saint Dhoramnath, overlooking the white salt plains.

November to February brings cool desert weather conditions good for climbing the steep rocky paths without facing extreme thermal conditions.

Cultural notes

The hill is deeply associated with the Kanphata (slit-eared) yogic sect. Legend has it that the revered saint Dhoramnath stood on his head atop the peak for twelve years doing severe penance, after which a historic stone monastery was established here.

By Road: Situated roughly 55 km northwest of Bhuj city via a well-paved road network. By Train: Bhuj Railway Station (BHUJ) is the nearest functional rail head. By Air: Bhuj Airport is the closest domestic option.

Being an isolated eco-tourism destination, commercial shops are not available on the hill. Visitors can find traditional Kutchi handicrafts and embroidered fabrics at the nearby base villages of Nakhatrana.

Gulmarg is a bowl of meadow at 2,650 metres in the Pir Panjal, and it does two completely different jobs depending on the month. December to March it is the only serious ski resort in India. The Apharwat face has real off-piste terrain and the snow is dry enough to justify the trip. May to September the snow is gone and it is a meadow full of wildflowers with a golf course on it, one of the highest anywhere. The gondola climbs in two stages. The first, to Kongdoori, almost always runs. The second, up to just under four thousand metres on Apharwat, is frequently closed for wind and its tickets are capped daily — buy both stages early or accept that you may only get the first. If you are skiing off-piste, a guide is not optional. This is avalanche terrain and it has killed people.

Leh & Ladakh

Tso Moriri

Tso Moriri, or Mountain Lake, is an offbeat high-altitude lake tucked away at an astounding elevation of 4,522 metres on the Changtang plateau of southeastern Ladakh. The body of water spans roughly 19 kilometers in length and is entirely fed by glacial meltwater from surrounding snow peaks exceeding 6,000 metres. It is protected under international environmental treaties as part of the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve. Unlike Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri is far quieter, less commercialized, and rawer for it. The cobalt-blue waters are flanked by the small nomadic settlement of Korzok, which houses an ancient mud-brick monastery. The surrounding marshy wetlands provide sanctuary to rare and endangered Himalayan migratory birds.

Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad's old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the way to see it is a walk that starts at seven in the morning. The heritage walk from Swaminarayan temple to Jama Masjid takes a couple of hours and goes through the pols — dense residential quarters, each historically one community, with shared courtyards, carved wooden facades and bird feeders on tall poles. Doing this without a guide means missing all of it, because the pols look like ordinary lanes from outside. The Sidi Saiyyed mosque's stone jaali — the tree-of-life screen — is the image the city is known for, and it takes five minutes to see. The Adalaj stepwell, half an hour out, takes longer and gives more. Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram is plain and unglamorous by design. Sit in it for a while rather than walking through. Gujarat is a dry state; alcohol is not served. The city eats vegetarian extremely well as a result — the Gujarati thali here is one of India's great meals. November to February.
