Kalpa is an offbeat mountain village on a high ridge at an elevation of 2,960 metres in the Kinnaur Valley. Positioned directly above the district hub of Reckong Peo, it looks down into the deep, thundering canyon of the Sutlej River. The settlement is known for its unique geographical position, with an uninterrupted view of the sacred Kinner Kailash massif. The architectural landscape of Kalpa features a beautiful indigenous blend of traditional wooden Hindu temples and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, showcasing the rich syncretic culture of Kinnaur. The village pathways wind through dense pine forests and some of the finest high-altitude organic apple orchards in the country.

When to go

The best time to visit Kalpa is from September to October during the apple harvest season, and from April to June for clear mountain views.

Why visit

Kalpa sits directly across the Sutlej from the Kinner Kailash range, close enough that the peaks fill a window and go from grey to pink in about ten minutes at dawn. Apple country too — come in September and the whole village is packing crates.

Cultural notes

Historically known as Chini, Kalpa was a preferred high-altitude getaway for Lord Dalhousie, the British Governor-General, who regularly traveled here on the historic Hindustan-Tibet Road to write administrative dispatches among peace and isolation.

How to reach

Kalpa is reached via the spectacular, cliff-cut National Highway 5 (historic Hindustan-Tibet Road) from Shimla up to Reckong Peo, followed by a steep 13 km climb. Regular state buses and private taxis operate from Shimla railway station (225 km away).
