Rohtang Pass / Atal Tunnel
Snow-clad high pass and the drive to Sissu (permit, seasonal)

hill station · Himachal Pradesh
Manali is really two places, and knowing which one you booked matters more than anything else about the trip.
Manali is really two places, and knowing which one you booked matters more than anything else about the trip. Mall Road Manali is a busy Indian hill-station town — traffic, hotels, shops selling the same shawls. Old Manali, up the hill across the river, is quieter, low-rise and where most people actually want to be. Vashisht, on the other side, has the hot springs and a similar feel. Hadimba temple, in the deodar forest above town, is four hundred years old with a tiered wooden roof and is worth the twenty minutes. Solang and Rohtang are the standard day trips and both are congested in season; Rohtang needs a permit, which is capped daily and must be arranged in advance. The Atal Tunnel changed the geography here. Lahaul, which used to be a full expedition, is now well under an hour away, and going through it for the day gives you a completely different landscape. May and June are the peak and are crowded. October and November are clear, cold and quiet. Do not expect snow in town below about December, whatever the photographs suggest.
A relatively young hill town by Himalayan standards, Manali grew from a small village named for the sage Manu into a tourist destination from the 1960s onward, after the original Kullu Valley capital Naggar declined and road access improved. It boomed further as Kashmir tourism dipped in the 1990s.
A Himalayan hill town at the mouth of the Kullu Valley — gateway to Solang, Rohtang Pass and the road to Leh.

March to June for pleasant weather, December to February for winter snow sports.
Manali is busier and more built up than its reputation, and still worth a night, because it is where the road over to Lahaul and Spiti begins. Stay in Old Manali rather than on the Mall.
The valley takes its name from Sage Manu, the ancient Hindu lawgiver, and for a long time it was a quiet farming valley that traded with Ladakh. The 16th-century wooden Hidimba Devi Temple is still the cultural and spiritual centre of local life.
The closest airport is Bhuntar Airport, 50 km away. The newly widened four-lane National Highway 3 runs to Manali, with deluxe Volvo AC sleeper buses operating daily from Delhi and Chandigarh.
