Kangra Fort stands on a hillock at the confluence of the Manjhi and Banganga rivers in the Dhauladhar foothills, about 20 km from Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. Spread over 463 acres, it is described as the largest fort in the Indian Himalayas and one of the oldest, built by the Katoch dynasty of Rajputs.

A short history

The fort's origins are linked to the Katoch dynasty, with 9th-10th century Jain and Hindu temples inside it. Its earliest recorded historical reference is Mahmud of Ghazni's invasion in 1009 AD, when the shrine within the fort was plundered. It was captured by Muhammad bin Tughluq in 1337 and by Firuz Shah Tughluq around 1351-1360. In 1540 it fell to a general of Sher Shah Suri. Raja Dharam Chand submitted to Akbar in 1556, and in 1620 Emperor Jahangir's forces starved the fort into surrender, after which it was annexed to the Mughal Empire. The fort surrendered to Sikh leader Jai Singh Kanhaiya in the 1770s-80s, and Raja Sansar Chand regained it through treaty around 1785-86. Besieged by the Gurkhas 1807-1809, it was relieved by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who formally acquired the fort in 1809. During the First Anglo-Sikh War it was besieged in 1846 and passed to British control. It was severely damaged by an earthquake on 4 April 1905. [Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangra_Fort]

Manali is really two places, and knowing which one you booked matters more than anything else about the trip. Mall Road Manali is a busy Indian hill-station town — traffic, hotels, shops selling the same shawls. Old Manali, up the hill across the river, is quieter, low-rise and where most people actually want to be. Vashisht, on the other side, has the hot springs and a similar feel. Hadimba temple, in the deodar forest above town, is four hundred years old with a tiered wooden roof and is worth the twenty minutes. Solang and Rohtang are the standard day trips and both are congested in season; Rohtang needs a permit, which is capped daily and must be arranged in advance. The Atal Tunnel changed the geography here. Lahaul, which used to be a full expedition, is now well under an hour away, and going through it for the day gives you a completely different landscape. May and June are the peak and are crowded. October and November are clear, cold and quiet. Do not expect snow in town below about December, whatever the photographs suggest.
