Bir Billing is India's paragliding capital and one of the best free-flight sites in the world, set against the Dhauladhar range in Himachal Pradesh. The twin spots — the take-off at Billing and the landing meadows at Bir — have turned a quiet Tibetan-settlement village into a buzzing hub for adventure seekers, digital nomads and cafe-hoppers. Beyond paragliding, Bir has quietly become a workation favourite, with fast Wi-Fi cafes, co-working stays, Tibetan monasteries, a tea-garden landscape and a thriving long-stay community. It blends adrenaline, Buddhist calm and remote-work comfort in a way few Indian towns do.

When to go

October to November and March to May offer the best flying conditions and weather. Monsoon halts paragliding.

Why visit

Billing is the launch and Bir is the landing, about a thousand metres below it. The good flying is October and November, and Bir has hosted a Paragliding World Cup. The Tibetan colony arrived here in the sixties and its monasteries are the quiet half of the village.

Cultural notes

Bir is home to a large Tibetan refugee settlement with several monasteries and a Buddhist institute, giving the town a distinct Tibetan cultural character alongside its adventure scene.

How to reach

Nearest airport: Gaggal/Dharamshala (70 km). Nearest narrow-gauge rail: Ahju/Baijnath; broad-gauge: Pathankot (built to Joginder Nagar line). Buses and cabs run from Dharamshala and Mandi.

The permanent exhibition is titled I am Tibetan, this is my story, and it runs across ten sections. This is the Central Tibetan Administration's own museum, in the CTA complex at McLeod Ganj, and it makes no attempt at neutrality: it was set up in 1998 to document Tibetan history and culture and to press the case on the occupation, the human rights record and the environmental damage. The collection runs past 30,000 photographs, alongside everyday objects, video and installations. Go before you wander the rest of McLeod Ganj rather than after; it changes what you notice.

Hadimba temple, in the deodar forest above town, is four hundred years old with a tiered wooden roof and is worth the twenty minutes. Solang and Rohtang are the standard day trips and both are congested in season; Rohtang needs a permit, which is capped daily and must be arranged in advance. The Atal Tunnel changed the geography here. Lahaul, which used to be a full expedition, is now well under an hour away, and going through it for the day gives you a completely different landscape. May and June are the peak and are crowded. October and November are clear, cold and quiet. Do not expect snow in town below about December, whatever the photographs suggest.

Tourism in Dalhousie centres around the historic public squares of Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk, linked by wooded walking paths like Garam Sadak. The town is the quiet alternative to the commercial hill stations, with views of the winding Ravi River and the distant snow-covered peaks of the inner Himalayas.
