McLeodganj, the upper town of Dharamshala, is the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile, and one of India's most beloved workation and backpacker bases. On a ridge of the Dhauladhar range, it blends Tibetan Buddhist culture, Himalayan trekking and a deeply traveller-friendly cafe and hostel scene. The town is a hub for meditation and yoga retreats, momos and global cafes, and treks to Triund and the Indrahar Pass. With its mix of monasteries, fast Wi-Fi cafes, long-stay hostels and a permanent international community, it has become a year-round magnet for digital nomads, solo travellers and spiritual seekers alike.

When to go

March to June and September to November are ideal. Monsoon is lush but wet; winters are cold with snow on the heights.

Why visit

McLeodganj is where the Dalai Lama lives, and the temple complex is open to anyone who turns up. Triund is a four-hour walk to the ridge — start early, because it now gets busy enough to queue.

Cultural notes

McLeodganj is the spiritual and political heart of the Tibetan diaspora, centred on the Tsuglagkhang complex (the Dalai Lama's temple). Tibetan cuisine, handicrafts and Buddhist teachings shape daily life.

How to reach

Nearest airport: Gaggal/Dharamshala (15 km). Nearest broad-gauge rail: Pathankot (85 km). Overnight Volvo buses run from Delhi; cabs connect from the airport and Dharamshala lower town.
