Ask about the head hunting days here and you get the story told with pride rather than embarrassment: Chungtia counts itself among the few Ao villages never defeated, and the warriors still turn up in the folk songs. Walk up to the log drum on the hilltop, which is the one thing to make sure you see. The village sits in the Ongpangkong range at 1,025 metres, sixteen kilometres north-west of Mokokchung, with the Mokokchung-Mariani highway clipping its eastern corner, and it runs on without a break into Sabangya and Aliba. Edward Clark needed Chungtia's permission before he could stay at Molung in 1872.
