Tuensang was built to run an office. The town was founded in 1947 to administer what was then the North Eastern Frontier Agency, the country that has since been carved into the Tuensang, Mon, Longleng, Kiphire, Noklak and Shamator districts, and it remains the headquarters of its own. Nearly 37,000 people live here. That administrative history is the honest reason to come: it is the way into the far east of Nagaland rather than a destination in itself.
