Chhatbir, as everyone actually calls it, lies 20 km from Chandigarh on the Zirakpur-Patiala route, and it is the largest zoo in Punjab: 369 mammals, 400 birds and 20 reptiles, among them Asiatic lions, Bengal tigers, gaur and gharial. The thing to plan around is the walk-in aviary, 300 metres long and the longest in India, with 32 bird species across five themed sections. It was built in the 1970s and named in 1977 after Mahendra Chaudhary, then governor of Punjab. Go early and go with children; midday at a zoo is a lot of sleeping animals.
