Mahabalipuram, historically known as Mamallapuram, sits on the Bay of Bengal roughly 55 km south of Chennai and is known for its rock monuments carved in the open air. The ancient Pallava dynasty developed it as a maritime trading port. Its UNESCO-listed monuments fall into three kinds. The Shore Temple, built of cut stone blocks, stands right on the line where the waves break. Massive relief panels are carved across the granite cliff faces. And the Pancha Rathas are five monoliths, each cut into the shape of a processional chariot.

Why visit
Pallava work from the seventh and eighth centuries, all of it cut from the granite where it already stood. Arjuna's Penance is the largest rock relief in India. The trade never died here either — the workshops along the road are still cutting stone by hand.
Cultural notes
UNESCO inscribed the town in 1984. It flourished in the 7th century CE under the royal patronage of the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I, and its harbour was the gateway through which early Indian maritime trade reached the empires of Southeast Asia. You can still see the influence in the architecture of Bali and Cambodia.
How to reach
On the multi-lane East Coast Road from Chennai, about an hour's drive from Chennai International Airport or Central Railway Station by private tourist taxi, shared van or public bus.
