Madhabdev founded this sattra in 1583, and what has actually lasted is not the building but the system: his disciple Mathuradasa Ata, a Chandala by birth, took charge as the first Satradhikar, and the broadly democratic administration set up under Burha Ata still runs the place. The structure you walk into is not the original either. It began as a kutcha house and was rebuilt in 1878 with big pillars and decorative wall paintings. Come for the way it works and for those paintings; if you want antiquity in stone, Assam has better.
