Hundreds of Shiva lingas lie scattered across roughly a kilometre of hillside here, some the size of a fist and some far larger, along with votive stupas and Hindu, Buddhist and Jain figures cut into the rock. The legend is that Vyasa carved 99,999 of them to build a second Kashi; nobody has counted what actually survives, and centuries of neglect and pilferage have taken plenty. It sits about 13 km southeast of Goalpara, the nearest city, and 132 km northwest of Guwahati, far enough that few people come, which is much of the appeal. Give yourself time to wander rather than tick it off.
