Excavation here has turned up twelve Buddhist viharas, one Jain vihara, twenty-two Shiva temples and five to Vishnu, plus Shakti and Tantric shrines, an underground granary market and a sixth-century bath house, which gives you some idea of what Sirpur was before it became a village beside the Mahanadi. It was the capital of the Sharbhapuriya and Somavamshi kings of Dakshina Kosala, Hindu, Buddhist and Jain at once, and busy enough between the 5th and 12th centuries that Hieun Tsang came through in the 7th. It is 78 km east of Raipur: a day, not an hour, and worth the whole of it.
