Dakor is a temple town in the Kheda district of central Gujarat, built around the Ranchhodraiji Temple and the stone-stepped Gomti Lake. Its Krishna deity is one of the region's most revered; local legend says the image came from Dwarka out of love for a devotee named Bodana. The town is busiest on full-moon days, when large crowds gather for prayers.

When to go

October to March is mild and comfortable, which makes the packed temple corridors and the bazaar lanes easier going.

Why visit

Join the devotional atmosphere of an active Krishna temple, time your visit for the full-moon celebrations, and take a quiet boat ride on Gomti Lake.

Cultural notes

Dakor is where Vaishnavite folk culture in central Gujarat runs strongest. At Holi the town fills with colour, and folk musicians gather to play the great drums and sing the old classical poetry of Krishna's pastimes.

How to reach

By Train: Dakor Railway Station (DKR) has regular regional passenger and express trains. Anand Junction is only 30 km south. By Air: Vadodara Airport and Ahmedabad Airport are both roughly 75 km away. By Road: State highways run direct to the town, served by GSRTC buses.
