Lakhpat's fort walls run for kilometres along the edge of the Great Rann of Kutch, enclosing what was once a thriving 18th-century trading port and is now largely empty — a rampart town looking out over salt flats where the sea has long since retreated. Within the walls, a 16th-century gurudwara commemorates two visits by Guru Nanak, its relics still on display, making Lakhpat as much a Sikh pilgrimage stop as a ruined fort.

A short history

Named for Rao Lakha, a 13th-century Sindh ruler, the fort's surviving walls date to the 1800s, when they were enlarged under Fateh Muhammad before command passed to Mohim Miyam. It flourished as a coastal trading hub at the mouth of the Kori Creek before trade declined and the town depopulated through the 19th and 20th centuries, leaving the ramparts as the main surviving structure.
