Gondal is a preserved, sophisticated royal heritage town in the Rajkot district of Saurashtra. Historically operating as a prominent first-class princely state ruled by the progressive and visionary Jadeja Rajput dynasty, Gondal is celebrated across India for its advanced 19th-century urban planning, classical school architectures, grand riverside palaces, and private institutional collections of functional vintage automobiles.

When to go

October to March is the ideal winter window, with mild, highly pleasant daytime weather suited for touring the extensive palace complexes and private garages comfortably.

Why visit

A small Saurashtra princely town where the palaces are still lived in and run as hotels, so you sleep in them instead of touring them. The garage of vintage cars is the surprise, and the carved stone balconies of the Naulakha are the best thing here.

Cultural notes

The destination reflects a deeply refined Rajput-Kathiawari princely heritage, heavily influenced by the legendary ruler Maharaja Bhagvatsinhji, who famously made primary education compulsory for girls and compiled the first comprehensive Gujarati dictionary.

How to reach

By Train: Gondal Railway Station (GDL) connects cleanly to regional express networks. Rajkot Junction is situated 40 km north. By Air: The new Rajkot International Airport is the closest domestic and international flight terminal. By Road: Highly accessible via national highway bus vectors running from Rajkot and Ahmedabad.
