Pandharpur on the Chandrabhaga (Bhima) river is the spiritual heart of Maharashtra — home of Vitthal, the brick-standing form of Krishna, and his consort Rakhumai. For 800 years the Varkari saints, from Dnyaneshwar to Tukaram, have sung their way here; every Ashadhi Ekadashi, palkhis bearing the saints' padukas converge on foot from across the state in the wari, a river of dindis a million strong chanting 'Vitthal Vitthal' to the doors of the dark, smiling god.
