Ranthambore is one of the largest and best-known wildlife sanctuaries in northern India, with a thriving population of the endangered Royal Bengal tiger. It lies in Sawai Madhopur district, where the ancient Vindhya and Aravalli ranges meet, and the ground is a mix of rugged rocky cliffs, dry deciduous forest and lakes linked one to the next. The 10th-century Ranthambore Fort stands inside the forest, and it is what makes the park look like nowhere else. Tigers here hunt in broad daylight, across the old stone ruins, the palace pavilions and the lake edges. The park is run under strict environmental rules and divided into ten safari zones, which keeps the vehicles spread out and the pressure off the ecological core.
Once the private hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur, centred on a 10th-century fort built by the Chauhan dynasty, Ranthambore was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and became one of the original nine Project Tiger reserves in 1973. Its ruins now double as backdrops for some of the most photographed tigers in the world.
One of the best places on Earth to see wild tigers in daylight, set around a ruined 10th-century fort.

The park runs safaris from 1 October to 30 June, and October to April is the comfortable half of that.
Book the safari online as far ahead as you can: zones are allotted rather than chosen and the better ones go months in advance. Closed through the monsoon, open October to June. The fort inside has a working Ganesh temple, so pilgrims share the track with the jeeps.
The Maharajas of Jaipur kept this as their private hunting ground, closed to everyone else, until it was declared a protected sanctuary under Project Tiger in 1973. Ranthambore Fort stands at the centre of it, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the ancient Trinetra Ganesha Temple still very much alive inside.
The main railhead is Sawai Madhopur Railway Station, just 11 km from the main park gates. The closest airport is Jaipur International Airport, 160 km away, connected by state highways.

Tiger sightings are not guaranteed on any single safari, so most visitors book three to four safaris across different zones over their stay to improve the odds.
October to June, since the park closes during the monsoon; April to June has the hottest weather but the best sighting chances as animals gather near water.
