Ahhichatragarh — the "Fort of the Hooded Cobra" — spans 36 acres in Nagaur, its palaces still carrying original period furniture, objects and wall paintings after one of India's most sustained fort restorations. The complex hosts the annual World Sacred Spirit Festival, and its Mughal-influenced gardens and water channels are considered among the most complete surviving examples of Rajput-Mughal garden design.
Nagaur Fort (Ahhichatragarh) is known for
A short history
The fort's original construction date and founding dynasty are not consistently documented across available sources and are marked here as needing further verification; it was substantially expanded during the Mughal period. What is well documented: the Mehrangarh Museum Trust took control of the fort in 1985 and led a restoration funded by four Getty Foundation grants and two grants from the UK's Helen Hamlyn Trust, work that won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2002 and was shortlisted for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2011-2013).
