Chandragiri was the last capital of the Vijayanagara empire — the Aravidu kings ruled from here after the fall of Hampi, and it was in the Raja Mahal that the grant for Fort St. George, the founding of Madras, was signed in 1639. The three-storeyed Raja Mahal and Rani Mahal stand below a boulder-strewn fortified hill, and the palace museum holds Vijayanagara bronzes. Tirupati is just 15 km away.
