Look up. The paintings are the reason to come, bright and closely detailed frescoes of Rama and Krishna drawn from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas, and unusually well preserved for 16th-century work. Carving covers nearly every exposed surface of this Vijayanagara temple to Virabhadra, the fierce form of Shiva, which means you will be here longer than you planned. Do not stop at the building itself. The Nandi lies about 200 metres away, cut from a single block of stone and reckoned one of the largest of its kind anywhere, and walking out to it is the better half of the visit.
