Sri Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala
One of the world's most-visited temples
pilgrimage site · Andhra Pradesh
Tirupati, in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, is one of the great pilgrimage destinations of India: the Sri Venkateswara Temple stands above it on the Tirumala Hills, seven ridges said to be the hoods of the cosmic serpent Adisesha. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams trust runs the place with remarkable precision, and it has to — tens of millions of devotees come every year. From the tiered darshan waiting halls to the handing out of the GI-tagged Tirupati Laddu prasad, the hilltop shrine takes more pilgrims, and more money, than almost any other on earth.
The temple's core structure dates to at least the 9th century under the Pallavas, expanded through the Chola, Pandya and especially Vijayanagara periods (14th-15th century), when kings and merchants endowed it with gold and land. Legend holds that Lord Venkateswara appeared here to save humanity from the trials of Kali Yuga, and devotees still tonsure their hair as an offering — the temple trust auctions this hair internationally, one of its many revenue streams that make it the richest in the world.
India's most-visited religious shrine and the richest temple trust in the world, drawing more pilgrims annually than the Vatican.

September to February, when the hills are cool enough to make the queues bearable.
Book a darshan slot before you travel; turning up for the free queue can cost most of a day in a shed. Walking up the Alipiri steps puts you in a separate, faster queue, which is the thing first-timers do not know. The laddu counter comes after darshan, not before.
The Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas and the Vijayanagara Empire all endowed this temple in turn, and each left its mark. Emperor Krishnadevaraya was the most open-handed of them: his gifts of gold gilded the inner dome, the Ananda Nilayam.
Tirupati International Airport and Tirupati Main Railway Station both serve the town. A six-lane ghat road connects the base town to the Tirumala hill summit, with free transit buses running continuously.
