Patna built itself a gateway in 2018: a 32-metre sandstone arch on the bank of the Ganga, done in Mauryan style, standing in an acre inside the Samrat Ashok convention centre campus. It is a monument about a monument. The point is Pataliputra, and the arches carry inscriptions attributed to Megasthenes, Ashoka, the Buddha and Mahavira. It is six metres taller than the Gateway of India, a comparison it invites and does not really need. A short stop on the way to or from the river, no more than that.
