Everything worth knowing here came out of the ground rather than standing on it. This patch of Patna north of the railway station belongs to the wider Pataliputra site, and it gave up the monumental Pataliputra capital in 1895 to L.A. Waddell, then punch-marked coins, seals, beads and terracottas including the head of a smiling boy. The find that matters most is the hardest to picture: 137 metres of wooden palisade, dug out in 1926-27, thought to be Mauryan and possibly the wall Megasthenes described. Speculation puts a royal palace on this ground. Unless archaeology is your reason for being in Patna, this is one to read about.
