Small, and honest about it: 2.1 square kilometres of reservoir at Jhajha in Jamui district, near the Jharkhand border, protected as a bird sanctuary since 1984. The reason to come is winter. Thousands of migrating birds gather on the water from November to February, and over 133 species have been recorded; BirdLife International named it an Important Bird Area in 2004. The dragonflies and butterflies here have not even been catalogued yet. Jhajha station is 12 km away, Jamui 31 km, and Patna's airport 200 km, so this suits people already moving through south Bihar rather than anyone making a special trip.
