Sixty-one feet of sandstone and red granite, seated in meditation on a lotus in the open air at the end of Temple Street, with the Buddha's ten principal disciples ranged five to a side. The foundation stone went down in 1982, twelve thousand stonemasons worked on it for seven years, and the Dalai Lama consecrated it in 1989. A hollow spiral staircase runs from the ground up to the chest, its walls shelved with 16,300 small bronze Buddhas. It is modern and it means to impress, which after the Mahabodhi complex can feel like a lot. Go anyway, and go inside.
