A 167-metre wall of rockfill holds back the Sutlej at Salaper, on the boundary between Bilaspur and Mandi districts, with the power house sitting right at the toe of it. This is working infrastructure, not a monument: NTPC built it to run 800 MW, the foundation stone went down in 2000, construction only started in 2004, and the geology underneath held it up for years. It is 18 km from Bilaspur, just off the Chandigarh-Manali highway, which is the honest argument for stopping. You are passing anyway. Give it fifteen minutes.
