Timber, not tourism, is what this Kullu-district valley has run on for a hundred and fifty years — the Himalayan region's main forest contractors still come from here, and it was in Lug that the British Forest Department first strung cables and trolleys to haul logs out of the hills. Tourism is still spoken of in the future tense, which is rather the point. Start at Bhalyani, one of ninety-odd villages: the Katrusi Narayan temple, a 500-year-old deodar, a natural cold-water source, a big open ground. Since 2016 the apple orchards have been going over to persimmon, and Churla is the centre of that.
