Mizoram's second town sits on a ridge with hills on every side, 729 metres up, and that setting is what most visitors remember. For nine years, from 1889 to 1898, it was the capital of the British South Lushai Hills. About 157,000 people lived here as of 2023, so it is a working town rather than a resort, and it strings along its ridge instead of gathering round a centre. Use it as the base for the south of the state; there is more to see around Lunglei than inside it.
