Tsomgo Lake, written as Changu Lake, is a high-altitude glacial lake at an astounding elevation of 3,753 metres in the rugged East Sikkim district, inside a steep oval valley just kilometers from the international border, the crystal-clear waters are known for their unique ability to reflect changing shades, shifting from deep blue in summer to turquoise and solid white as winter freezes lock the surface into thick ice sheets. Driving further up the same high-security mountain corridor highway pass leads directly to the monumental Nathula Pass checkpoint, at a daunting altitude of 4,310 metres on the ancient Silk Road route, cutting directly through heavy military wire barricades separating India and China.
When to go
The recommended months to visit Tsomgo Lake are from April to May for pleasant daytimes, and October to November for clear dry mountain tracks.
Why visit
Both need permits arranged in Gangtok at least a day ahead through a registered agent, and Nathu La is open to Indian nationals only, on set days of the week. Tsomgo is at about 3,750 metres, which is a hard climb from Gangtok in one morning.
Cultural notes
Revered as a deeply sacred body of water by local indigenous Lepcha and Sikkimese Buddhist communities, the lake surface was traditionally used by ancient lamas to calculate seasonal weather omens. Nathula Pass historically formed a primary strategic node of the ancient Silk Road, facilitating trade caravans until its closure.
How to reach
Accessible exclusively from Gangtok via a rugged 54-kilometer uphill drive along a steep mountain highway pass. The route requires private or shared heavy multi-utility vehicles managed by experienced local mountain drivers.
