Soldiers look after this temple, and it shows. A bureaucrat named Appaji Pant built the shrine over a stone in the upper reaches of Gangtok in 1950; the Indian Army later acquired the land around it and inherited the temple along with the ground, and has maintained it since. The result is tidier and more orderly than most hill temples, and the height above town is the other half of the appeal. It is a short visit, so put it together with something else up that road.
