A short history

Settlement at Chunar is recorded from as early as 56 BC. Babur's garrison occupied the site in 1529. Sher Shah Suri seized control in the 1530s; when Humayun besieged the fort, Sher Shah agreed to surrender Bengal in exchange for keeping Chunar, later recapturing it. Akbar acquired the fort in 1575 for its strategic control of the Ganges and eastern trade routes. Under Aurangzeb, a mosque was built within the fort in 1663. The British formally acquired the fort in 1772 and secured full control by 1818. It later served as an artillery depot and state prison, most notably holding Rani Jind Kaur, widow of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, in 1849, from where she escaped disguised as a servant. India regained control in 1947. [Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chunar_Fort]
