A hillock at the northern edge of Tezpur carries this Shiva temple, and the building you will see is concrete: the old stone one, credited to king Bana, went in a renovation, so come for the site and its life rather than the architecture. Two things stay with people. The prasad is laddu laced with bhang, milk and spices, and pigeons are released here as a way of freeing ancestors' spirits. Maha Shivaratri draws devotees from far and wide; if queueing is not your idea of a temple visit, come on any other day.
