Deopahar

The stone temple on top of this hill was either never finished or was broken apart, most likely in the Assam earthquake of 1897, and the ruins do not settle the argument. What came out of the ground at Deopahar, the temple and its sculptures, is the reason Numaligarh counts among the archaeologically rich places of the state, and the carving repays a slow look: Brahmanical and local styles are visibly working on each other rather than one copying the other. It is a protected archaeological park with a site-museum under the Directorate of Archaeology, so there is somewhere to make sense of what you have seen.
