The fort at the eastern tip of Diu island exists because of a bad bargain. Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, wanted Portuguese help when Humayun moved to annex this territory, and the defence alliance that followed left the Portuguese holding Diu from 1537 until Indian forces took it in December 1961. Building began in 1535 and the walls were still being strengthened as late as 1546. It stands right against the town, so it is a walk rather than an outing, and it is counted among the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in the World.

St. Paul's Church, Diu

Of the three churches the Portuguese built on Diu Island, this is the one to choose if you are only going to see one — it is generally reckoned among the best baroque buildings in India, and the façade is the argument. It is also still a working church rather than a monument, so a visit lands somewhere between sightseeing and turning up at someone's service; go quietly. The full name is a paragraph in itself: the College of the Holy Spirit and Church of Our Lady of the Conception or Saint Paul.
