A short history

Construction was founded by Raja Umed Singh, who ruled Chamba from 1748 to 1764; sources differ on whether it was completed by his successor Raja Raj Singh (r. 1764-1794) or expanded later around 1860. The complex was designed along Mughal design principles as a five-storey building with a central courtyard and finely carved wooden doors and balconies. Interior walls were decorated with paintings depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Bhagavata Purana, and Durga Saptashati by artist Mian Tara Singh. It served as a royal residence and, on its western side, as a royal granary and treasury. After Indian independence, the palace was converted to public administrative use; some original wall paintings have been transferred to the National Museum in Delhi, while others are preserved in the Bhuri Singh Museum in Chamba.
