People call it the Canada Dam, and the name is not a local invention: Canada's foreign minister, Lester B. Pearson, formally opened it after it was commissioned in 1955. It generates power on the Mayurakshi near Dumka, drawing from a catchment of about 1,869 square kilometres. That catchment is worth keeping in mind when you plan, because a dam this dependent on rain looks like a different place full than it does drawn down. There is no monument here, only the wall, the water and the drive out from Dumka.
