Punjab's largest hydroelectric dam, also called the Thein Dam, holds back the Ravi 30 km from Pathankot and exactly the same distance from Kathua, because the border runs through the reservoir with up to 60 per cent of the water on the Jammu and Kashmir side. It is an earth-fill dam, among the highest in India, rated at 600 megawatts, and it took from 1981 to March 2001 to finish. Water and power rights here are still argued over between the two governments. Go for the reservoir and the drive; nothing has been built for visitors, and a working dam is a working dam.
